Things I Love. Things I Hate.

Sammy D at Bemuzin tagged me in the 10 Things I Love and Hate Challenge and I decided this was something I could easily relate to.  So this is my list of Love and Hate … as of today.

10 Things I Hate … ignoring all the bullies, liars, and cheaters that seem to fill the ranks of our various power brokers – and all the negative things happening in the world on a regular basis – this is a list of some of my everyday annoyances.

1. Traffic.  Even worse, I hate heavy, slow-moving traffic.  It makes me impatient and more than a little claustrophobic.  If you see me driving around on a cold day with all my windows open, I’m trying to keep the panic at bay.

2. Being late or rushing around like a madman trying to avoid being late.  See also #1.

3. The shrinking seats on commercial air flights and being folded into a tiny little space with no room to move … for hours.

4. Going to the dentist.  I’ve been blessed with beautiful looking teeth but they are a maintenance nightmare.  I’m a grinder – a serious, take-no-prisoners kind of grinder.  That spells disaster for my teeth and my dentist bills reflect it.

5. Violence, pornography, horror movies.  Really, this is considered entertainment?!

6. The phone ringing in the middle of the night.  It’s either a wrong number – seriously, if you are going to call someone at 3 am, wouldn’t you make sure you have the right number? – or it’s bad news.  Good news never arrives at 3 am.

7. Having monkey-brain kick in during the night and then laying there wide awake without any hope of going back to sleep.  Why do all our problems and worries feel magnified in the middle of the night?

8. The number I see every morning on the weigh scale.  Apparently my love of sweets is overpowering.

9. Broken promises.  Why is it that some people have a knack for over-promising and under-delivering?

10.  Feeling angry.  It’s such a waste of energy and usually accomplishes nothing except to give me a headache.

10 Things I Love … my family, friends, and Theo – my furry-faced baby – are all givens.  These are some of the extras that make me happy.

1. Climbing into a fresh, clean bed – bone-tired at the end of a busy day.  Having a good night’s sleep, waking up feeling refreshed and ready for almost anything.

2. The smell of fresh coffee beans, leather, and lilacs.  Each one is very different … and totally intoxicating.

3. Martinis – vodka or gin, I love them both.  Very dry, James Bond style – shaken, not stirred.  With olives, please.

4. Laughing.  Stories, movies, people … anything that makes me laugh.

5. The strength in my body because I work out.  Don’t be deceived by the thick layer of marshmallow I’m carrying around.  Underneath is a ripped body and most days it feels great.

6. The sound of a purring cat.  I wish I could purr too.  I think I’d be really good at it.

7. Being engrossed in a good book with a great story.  If I’m learning something at the same time … even better.

8. Getting a pedicure and having a great massage.  Both are a delightful decadence that feel wonderful.

9. Peanut butter and banana.

10.  Every *like*, every comment, every *follow* I receive.  It truly does make my day.

Like others before me, I’m going to break the rules of this challenge.  Rather than challenging 10 other people to respond with their Love-Hate list, I’m inviting ALL OF YOU to put together your list and post it.  Seriously – I’d like to read it.

Happy Monday – I hope it’s a good one.

Re No 10 on the likes list. It would be easy to like and comment on the vast majority of your posts because they are so entertaining but you’d soon get fed up. On a happy note after the birth of my son I phoned the rele’s up at around 2am with the good news… Not all were quite as excited as me….

There were several of your loves and hates that I nodded my head to… the cat purring is one of my favorite things. Only problem is, I have one cat (my son’s cat, actually) that has taken a liking to waking me up to purr in my face between 2:30 and 3:45 in the morning. Not sure what’s up with that so I hope she’ll give it a rest soon 🙂

I love the sound of Theo purring … but not during the night. He was eventually banished to the basement at nights for poor night-time etiquette.
Now he just knows that bedtime means going downstairs … and we sleep without interruption 🙂

  5. I don’t need to post the lists because ours are so amazingly similar. You can keep martinis though. And I’m so with you on the violence movie thing…honestly watching people be hurt is fun? Not for me. I like movies with happy endings thank you. Oh and peanut and banana? Please swap that to vegemite on toast – heaven x Loved your post, made me smile and nod 🙂

LOL – actually since I discovered vegemite as part of my 52 New Things, I’ve also discovered that banana and vegemite is a good combination 🙂

      • I was just about to click like to your comment….but then the full weight of vegemite and banana hit me! Seriously? Vegemite and banana? I’m a dinky die Aussie and there is no way I’d eat that combination (giggles) 🙂

  6. I do so agree with you lists Joanne except for 3, 5, & 9 on your love list. Don’t care for vodka or peanut butter and my body is nowhere near ripped! One extra hate for me – I hate having my right arm in plaster. So tired of left thumb typing. 😦 I’m getting all behind!

I don’t envy you with your cast right now … or the therapy you have ahead to get your wrist working properly again. Hope the healing part is going very well though!
You might not be ripped, but at least you don’t have my layer of marshmallow 😉

‘Monkey brain’ is a term I hereby am stealing. Yes I detest monkey brain. what is with that? You know what I would love. A baseball bat to beat monkey brain into submission. 🙂

Man, I am right with you on ALL the HATE things. I never quite got into peanut butter and banana. I’ve tried it a few times, but it never stuck as a staple. And I guess, when I go to make a sandwich, what I have in the house is what I eat. And I’m not much of a banana buyer. And pedicure…oh, no thank you. Very cool post

My list of happy things is quite different, but the ten things I hate are exactly the same as yours, probably in the same order, haha! I guess some irritations are universal. 🙂

  13. I feel fortunate to be able to have fresh sheets off the line all year round. (If you time it right. Sunday, yes. Today, no.) Love your lists. Agree with much of them.

I have a sneaking suspicion if I tried this I’d end up with two lists looking terribly similar. Running, wine, chocolate, smart phones, social media. So much to love and so much to hate.

Lovely post Joanne. You know I always look forward to a good read when I see “My life lived full” come up in the email list. Even it’s 5:50 AM, I have to rush to take my son to the city as he has a major presentation this morning and he’s going to be nervous and I have a stupid head cold.
And it was good read too. Thank you. Off to have my toast and shower to restore some humanity in this old body of mine. Thanks for the invite; its a big time killer so maybe not. You and I are totally aligned with the climbing into bed thing; Jeez I wish I could go back there right now.

I’m unable to do 10 of each, but I can tell you that your 1,2,4,7 and 8 would also be on my hate list. I would have to add liver and bleu cheese. I HATE those two foods. (BTW, I love “monkey brain.” Never heard that expression, but it fits the bill.)

In regard to love, I’m in agreeance with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. I would add fine dark chocolate and my boss to the list. (BTW, I am getting a massage tomorrow night. I’ll think of you as he kneads away the stress-induced trigger points.)

ooo – enjoy your massage!! I was thinking today that I’m overdue and need to book one asap!

      I love blue cheese … actually I don’t think I’ve ever had a cheese I didn’t like.
… but l haven’t eaten liver since I was newly married 32 years ago. Gilles – aka Mr Science – explained to me what the function of the liver was. Ewww. Forever ruined it for me.

Wow…except for the smell of lilacs and leather and the six pack you hide, we are dead ringers. I love the smell of the ocean and a freshly mowed lawn.

Adding to the hate column is the lack of live communication in our customer service industry. Automation is so impersonal, gets it wrong half the time usually takes three times longer than a live person. On a similar note, companies who put people with heavy foreign accents on customer service positions. I have nothing against foreigners I just get annoyed at having to ask the person to repeat themselves over and over so that I can decipher what was staid.

One final like is that there are no barriers in accent when writing so I can communicate to bloggers from all corners of the earth and understand them, provided they write in English! 😀😀

    • joannesisco says:

I would have to add that I’m not a fan of phones in general, so any gripe I have with customer service starts with having to use the phone.
… but since I’ve been surrounded by people with various accents most of my life, I’m actually pretty good at understanding what people are saying 🙂

I agree that the smell of the ocean and freshly mowed grass are both good ones!

  21. The middle of the night thing, when my hamster is running in it’s wheel and doesn’t stop…it drives me nuts. The hamster wasn’t there all my life, it just moved in when I hit menopause.

After not sleeping last night and worrying, I just read this in my comatose fog… I love the marshmallow layer around the ripped muscles… I need to take a similar attitude. Hope you have a good day, one filled with clean sheets and peanut butter and bananas. 🙂

  23. Terrific lists, Joanne. ❤
It's 10:10 a.m. and I'm tired already. A fresh clean bed made up with sheets brought in from outside would do me good.

  24. Hah! Joanne, someone beat me to it….this is what I was going to get you on this week ! However, I’m glad you posted first…you’ve given me the guts to post my own…..I’m not very brave at putting out my feelings so openly, but seeing yours, I’m going to do it! Very good lists….on both counts….sorry to say, I’m a grinder too….hate that.

  25. I do the night worrying thing… but then I am a worrier, but working on it. Monkey brain, first learned about it in a book called The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Zen Living… I keep it close all the time.. 🙂 I share many of your loves and hates. I just wanted to tell you that I enjoy your blog. I found you through Barbara, silverinthebarn, and enjoy your comments there. I like wine time, but I think I should give a martini a go, it would be a great reason to eat green olives… 😀

Oh thank you! What a lovely comment. I simply adore Barbara! 🙂

I probably should warn you that a well made martini is a thing of beauty … but a badly made martini is undrinkable. Unfortunately there are a lot of badly made martinis out there. Happy experimenting!

I’ve now made a note to check out The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Zen Living 🙂

  27. Well, unfortunately, I don’t have time for my whole love/hate list. I actually have been challenged on this one and I am yet to fulfill. I feel like the hates would be way too easy and I don’t want to come across as bitter.

I agree with you on everyone of the hates and many of the likes…probably with the exception of martinis. I’m not a drinker.

  28. “Why do all our problems and worries feel magnified in the middle of the night?” I’ve asked myself the same question. I’m guessing the primal brain is in charge of things at night when we are most vulnerable.
