More Monkey Business

The Year of the Monkey continues on its disruptive path through my life.

Not content with wrecking my Big 60 travel plans, costing me literally thousands of dollars in repairs and replacements of various failed devices this year, and tripping my husband’s health at every turn, this time that little monkey bastard took a swipe at son #2.

Misha has already seen more than his fair share of emergency rooms -not including an unhappy childhood altercation with a hive of angry wasps.

Five years ago he had a less-than-graceful landing while snowboarding and broke his hip. At the tender age of only 23, he was having conversations with the surgeon about possibly needing a hip replacement.

Thankfully they were able to repair the damage and virtually guarantee (with fingers crossed) that it would be at least 20 years before hip replacement might be required.

While still on crutches with a recovering hip, he tripped and fell … this time breaking the heel of his foot.  Bone chips embedded in his Achilles tendon could not be safely removed with surgery and he was told it was unlikely he would be able to continue running.

… but Misha had other plans.  He became a Spartan athlete.

So this latest unexpected excursion to the nearest emergency room came a huge surprise. It turns out this Spartan warrior is still not indestructible.

Misha was attending the wedding of a friend and after an evening of happy celebration, he twisted his foot descending a set of stairs.

The lump on his heel are the renegade bone chips from his fall in 2011.

With a foot that is several shades of swollen and bruised, the x-ray was inconclusive. We have our fingers crossed that the follow-up with the Fracture Clinic this week will rule out anything serious and that this will be a quick recovery.

Still looking all GQ the morning after a night in Emergency

In the meantime, I had hoped those crutches gathering dust downstairs in the basement for the past 5 years would never be needed again.  With mixed feelings, they were pushed back into service.

I hope that obnoxious little Monkey is proud of himself, because I’ve had enough.

Go. Away.

    • Thank you – yes, Misha’s foot has healed although it still needs a few more weeks of regaining strength.
Next week I have another set of xrays and I’m hoping for good news too. I feel stuck in a holding pattern since I’m limited in my activities.

I’m looking forward to seeing the end of this Monkey!!

  1. Oh goodness you’ve had a tough year. But fear not, the Monkey will be gone soon. I love how your son manages to look so cool despite what happened 😊😊

  2. One week later your post, I am finally visiting WP in an effort to escape some of the devastation that I feel after the election.
Goodness what a year you all are having. By now, I’m assuming you all have been to the Fracture Clinic and have some answers.
Aside from all that, you are so right: he is GQ!

    • Laurie, I really don’t know how we’re going to get through the next 4 years with this horrifying change in direction in American politics. There simply isn’t a silver lining in here that I can find 😦

  3. Wow, he sounds like one gutsy soul! Not fun to have a series of serious incidents….poor guy!! He sure is feisty though so it seems like he will be on the recovery path in no time. But as for you ~ as the mom of this ( very handsome guy) it takes the gut outta ya!! I always say…as long as my kids are healthy, I can cope with everything else.

    Speedy recovery to both!

  4. URGH – I know exactly how you feel!! Yet, we mom’s are powerless. My son has a rare vascular malformation on the bottom of his foot, so he can do no weight-bearing exercise. But he’s in fine form (as your son is) by weightlifting and bicycling. To work. From a small suburban town to the city of San Francisco. During commute time. Last year he was hit and needed mucho surgery to repair a horribly broken leg (with screws and metal rod). As soon as he healed he… yup, you guessed, got back on his bike. Three weeks ago a car got him. Might have broken his hand. Totaled his bike. But guess what he’s doing now? Yup, biking to work with a friend’s bike. URGH.
    Good luck to your son!!!

    • OMG!! You have reason to be even more leery of cycling than I am! I cringe every time my husband and son head out on bikes. Strangely, I worry less about myself 😉

Good luck to your son. It sounds like he too needs to be encased in bubble wrap.

  5. Your son is a handsome young man and so sorry this monkey has not let go of your household and family, Joanne!
My thoughts and prayers go out to Misha! Then, for good measure a second “round” for you, your husband and family. ❤
Now, as far as the country. I feel like I fell down some stairs not just hurting my foot, but my head and heart. Very sad and appalled at the huge numbers of those who feel for the vitriol spewed by Trump. I told a good friend of mine today, I will never call him President. Nope, just "that Trump."

    • Thanks Jan. I know in the grand scheme of things, I’ve been very lucky. So many people are dealing with so much worse hardship.
…. but honestly! This has been a year I’ll be happy see in the rearview mirror!!

      • It’s causing problems to Italy earthquake-wise, and yesterday we had a tornado at Ladispoli. Also I’ve been reading that a volcano long thought dormant is awakening just south of Roma. Might be 1000 years till it explodes but still. Somebody better tell the Pope to move his summer residence, it’s right there. (I’m SCARED of volcanoes.)

  6. Oh my goodness, what a lousy turn of events. I suspect he has the right attitude to get through this latest round of injury, but seems like he shouldn’t have to. That poor kid… who is most definitely GQ!

  7. Holy wow, that monkey sure has done him wrong. On the one hand, maybe he should hunker down on a sofa and be waited on hand-and-foot, but on the other hand, his perseverance is inspiring 🙂

    • Ha! I wish him luck trying to find someone to wait on him. He lives about an hour and a half away from us, so he isn’t going to get much more than sympathy by text message from me 😉
He was back at home on the weekend just for this wedding he attended.

We had to do a car exchange since he drives a manual shift. With one foot out of commission, I had to give up my car so he wouldn’t be stranded.

I haven’t driven a standard in at least 10 years. Today I discovered it’s like riding a bike. You never forget.

      Wait … I don’t have a great record with bikes …

  8. I think you might have to quarantine the whole family until the new year Joanne 🙂 Then after the new year have a calendar burning ceremony with sage and eye of newt. Hopefully next year will be much better for you and your family.

  9. Oh Joanne; I’m so sorry to hear about Mischa’s accident. I hope the damage isn’t serious and that the rest of your year is uneventful — boring even. Just get through the next few months safely and start afresh once the Monkey is back in his box. Kia Kaha.

    • I’m really hoping for good news when he gets a new x-ray this week. It’s not even as if I can help him much since he lives an hour and a half away.
Last night we exchanged cars since he can’t drive his manual shift for a while. At least I feel a little bit better knowing he’s not stranded and that he can get around.

  10. Ooh poor lad. I injured my left ankle playing football in my late twenties (jumped up to head the ball, twisted it on landing) and it was never the same again. Which might be a bit grim so I wouldn’t necessarily divulge that bit to Misha but happily it opened up a new world of cycling. No more nasty impact jolts to joints, my knees have never been happier :). Hope the monkey’s off the family back now.

    • The older we get, the more those injuries from our youth come back to haunt us. I shudder to think what that poor guy is going to be dealing with in 20 or 30 years!
In the meantime, lots of rest with an elevated foot, icing, and anti-inflammatories to get the swelling down before they take a new x-ray.

  11. OUCH! We wish him a speedy recovery, but considering all he’s been through already, coming through it with flying colours, I’m certain that this is little more than a hiccup.

  12. Joanne! You have had more than your fair share! I hope Misha’s foot isn’t too seriously hurt and that all of your luck turns for the better. Judy

    • Thanks Judy. I really am starting to shake my head a little. Enough already!

We just finished exchanging cars. Misha drives a standard and with an injured foot, he can’t drive it. I don’t think he’s partly happy about leaving his car with me – I haven’t driven a standard in at least 10 years – but the alternative was being stranded in K-W unable to go anywhere.
Meanwhile, I’m hoping that driving a standard comes back to me really quickly 😉

  13. You know his full name is Monk E. Wrench because that is what he throws into everyone’s plans. How crappy for your son. Hope you both have good news at the Fracture Clinic this week.

  14. Ow. Poor thing. I hope those crutches stay in the basement too. I looked up articles on monkey repellent. Apparently, they are very fearful of rubber snakes and it’s recommended that you place them in your garden and move them around once in a while because the monkeys do get used to them. I’d recommend a couple for your son too. 🙂

    • I have my fingers crossed that once the swelling goes down, it’s not as bad as it appears right now. An injury that takes a few months to heal would be a big problem for him.

  15. Oh goodness…what a hassle! Well here’s hoping that since the x-rays were inconclusive it’s only a sprain. How ironic that after all the athletic events he’s been involved in, his gets injured at a wedding!!

  16. That little monkey can go eat a green wiener and die. (I love animals, just not this one.)

I hope Misha gets good news from the clinic and is quickly on the mend. In the meantime, Misha should ask for a one-legged scooter so he doesn’t have to use those dang crutches.

  17. That sucks. What a terrible string of bad luck lately. I think we need to wrap your entire family in bubble-wrap before we let you leave the house.
I hope the swelling goes down quick and it turns out to be nothing more serious than a sprain.

    • Thanks Bridget. I hesitated a little bit in writing this one. In the grand scheme of things, I’m grateful that my string of ‘bad luck’ this year hasn’t really been so bad. One doesn’t have to look so far to see so much worse.
… but I’ll still be pretty happy to kick this year to the curb.

        • I hope it’s good news too. It has big implications if it’s a long heal … for example, I’ve had to exchange cars with Misha because his car is a manual shift. Obviously with an injured left foot, he can’t drive his car.
Driving his car in the city for an extended period of time could be rather trying!

  19. Seems wrong to hit ‘Like’ but it’s in the manner of support rather than pleasure. Geez Louise. Could you maybe lay out a string of bananas around your house as a line of defence?

On another note, breaking a hip and then turning into a Spartan athlete? Suddenly all my excuses for not running seem inadequate…..

    • It’s so interesting when you start to relate to your children as adults instead of children. I’ve discovered that this quiet, soft-spoken man is remarkably strong mentally with an equally strong sense of right and wrong. I’m rather proud of him … although I fear he might be a bit accident-prone :/

    • Can you believe the bride and groom actually drove him to the hospital?! Sheesh … I suspect that’s a story they’ll be telling their children some day.

… and he was probably the best dressed person in the ER that night 🙂
