Technology Hell

I’ve been fighting my way through the fires of technology hell, and have almost given up hope that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Let me start by saying I have a richly cultivated mistrust of machinery in general, technology in particular.

I blame it on being introduced to Dr Who and the Daleks at a young and impressionable age.  Since then I’ve tried to maintain a respectful demeanour with any non-human life forms, albeit in an uncomfortable kind of way.

In my childhood that discomfort was directed towards the family washing machine – which, during the spin cycles, revealed it was secretly possessed – and the large snow graters that cleared the roads in the winter.

Wyevale – June 2017

As an adult, however, most of my deferential behaviour is reserved for computers both big and small, and these insidious monsters have been the subject of my recent descent into technology hell.

For the past couple of years I’ve been working with a laptop that is the biggest piece of manmade junk ever created.  We started off on the wrong foot from the very first time I removed it from its shipping box, and our relationship never improved.

Let’s just say that I eventually reached the point where I neither unplugged or shut down my laptop in the increasingly desperate hope that it would continue to operate with a reasonable amount of efficiency.

The final straw came after a 6 hour marathon call with DELL technical support failed to resolve any of my issues following an automatic software update by Windows 10.

Although I had been a PC user since the early days of personal computing in the 1980s, I was defecting to Team Apple.

Me – the final straw just snapped

It’s been about 2 weeks now since I’ve armed myself with a shiny new MacBook and I feel like I’ve been dropped behind enemy lines without a map or reference guidebook.

Apple language is a secret code of seemingly random hand gestures that makes things happen whether you want them to or not.  For the uninitiated, it’s been unnerving to say the least.

However, over the past week, after spending countless hours bonding with Siri, she has helped me navigate the turbulent waters of backups, moving files, reformatting external drives, and endless other minor details like ‘where the hell are my files?!’

… but there is one thing that continues to elude me – recovering my Lightroom photo library with its catalog.

I’ve been through this particular version of hell once already with the demon PC, and it ended badly.  I eventually had to rebuild the catalog from scratch.  With a library that is now more than double its size from the last time, there is NO FREAKING WAY I’m going to manually rebuild that catalog again.

So until I find a solution to this problem, my access to photos is extremely restricted.

fullsizeoutput_6f
Random photo because that’s all I’m capable of right now.

Which now brings me to my most recent SNAFU.

After spending several weeks and countless hours working on a post for the Cherished Blogfest this weekend, I hit the “Publish” button last night with a sigh of contentment.  That contentment was short-lived because to my horror, WP published a blank post.  Nothing.  Nada.  Nichts.

Nor does it appear that I’m able to recover the original pre-published document.  I just don’t have the energy, or heart, to even consider trying to recreate that post.

Let there be no doubt.  Technology is not our friend and I think I’ve just uncovered its secret long-term mission is to slowly drive us all insane.

For me, that is just as fearsome as the Daleks battlecry of “Exterminate”.

{Note – The Cherished Blogfest has been extended to the end of next weekend.  Check it out, join in … it’s a great antidote to counteract all the negativity permeating the world … like this post}

    • Yeah! That describes my reaction perfectly!

With help from another blogger, I’ve been able to recover some of it, but I’m a little too busy this weekend to attempt to rewrite the rest of it for tomorrow’s deadline 😒

    • No, it really was 6 hours … and all for nothing. I’ve never been impressed with DELL service and that was the last straw.

Happily, I’m past the rough stuff and everything is working again … although maybe I should whisper that since I wouldn’t want to jinx myself.

But then, without computers, I couldn’t scream virtually with you as I’m doing.
And I wouldn’t have been able to read your blog post, which made me laugh out loud and groan simultaneously. xo

    • Shitology. Oh yes, that’s a good word. I’m going to remember it 😏

Thankfully, all my issues are behind me now, although I still have some cleanup work to do. Fortunately, none of it will slow me down significantly.
It also appears that you are back up and running. Yay! for technology that works!

    • Yes! My problems have been resolved and I can access my photos in Lightroom again … and wild jubilation was heard throughout the land 😉

Good luck with the transition of your photos to an external hard drive. If you haven’t done a migration before, I strongly recommend viewing a few youtube videos on the subject to help you plan and execute the move. Hopefully it will save you some scary moments like mine along the way.

  5. It’s good to read and see you again Joanne! Even in your moments of technology hell 🙂 can truly relate to your frustrations as I am similarly challenged – but constantly – with all types of technology but particularly computers. It is all maddening. And soon artificial intelligence will take over! Caveat emptor!

  6. I feel your pain. My PC is 7 years old and doing all sorts of weird things. Don’t want to switch to Apple at this stage (too many files written and saved in Word), but the whole new laptop scenario just drives me up a wall. Bought my wife a Microsoft Surface several years ago and neither of us ever mastered it. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

    • I was assured that all my PC Word and Excel files would open ok on the MAC and so far, so good!
I even had a major breakthrough yesterday and learned a way to get my photo library and catalog to start talking to each other again.
I’m going to be ok in this new Apple world after all 😎

    • Thanks Karen. I seem to have already leaped along the learning curve and have settled into my Mac very easily.
Calling Apple tech was next on my list of things to try, and then another blogger sent me a youtube link that was the magic I was looking for! My library and catalog are now playing nicely together. I still have a few hours of cleanup work to do, but all is well and good 😃

  8. We started our Home computing experience with MAC way back when, but work was PC, so to be able to talk to work while working at home we switched to PC. Earlier this year He-Man was up for work laptop refresh and decided to switch to MAC from PC. The transition wasn’t smooth. There were lots of adapters required he didn’t know he’d need, and he had so many issues trying to get his programs converted from PC to MAC. He complained everyday for months, and was talking with support all the time to get things working right. It took months to get comfortable with it and working to the point he wasn’t complaining anymore. After seeing his issues I’ve decided I’m sticking with PC for the foreseeable future.

    • Oh, and that whole “where’s my catalog/image” thing with Lightroom is the main reason I won’t use it. Photoshop doesn’t have that issue. My images live happily in my Pictures folder on my hard-drive or on my external drive. I know right where they are all the time.

      Liked by 1 person

    • The adaptor issue is a royal pain and Apple did not make any fans with that move.
Thankfully my transition has gone pretty well – quite frankly, my PC was causing me so much trouble, that the Mac learning curve was minor in comparison.
The really good news is that my catalog and library are now playing together. Woohoo! I still have some work to do to clean it up, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
Throughout this experience, I’ve learned a lot about Lightroom and it’s actually got a lot more functionality than I’ve ever realized. That’s normally the case, isn’t it?

When you deleted your post, did you also delete it from your WP trashcan? It might still be in there and recoverable. That’s something I just discovered.

  10. OMG! We have been going down the same rabbit hole! I too have had the same issues with the same machines, though I haven’t figured out how to use Lightroom and just store everything on thumb drives and external drives. The only real peeve I have with Apple is that it doesn’t have that easy to find delete button for typing errors or the cut and crop button that allows you to copy sections of a page. Pain in the ass if you want my opinion!

I haven’t given up on my Dell completely because it does things Apple can’t…I wish they’d get married and share the best of both worlds. Or perhaps their differences might stand out too much and they would end up as the marriage from hell.

I feel your pain getting locked out of your photos. I think technology is following the way of the world. A lot of things are talking but no one is really communicating. BTW, I had a similar problem posting on WP. Lost a post I’d written and it didn’t save it to drafts. Not sure if it’s WP or all the changes being made in updates…trying to protect our digital security. I admit, I gave up too. It’s really frustrating when you want to communicate, invest time in doing so and then have it ripped away from you. Maybe I’ll have to go back to live communication again…but then again, virtual is so much easier. You don’t have to worry about time zones or getting your creative juices flowing in the wee hours of the morning. The constant battle between convenience and frustration. Hope things get better for you.

    • The issue with technology now is that we are so deeply entrenched into it, I can’t imagine living without it. When it works, life is grand … but teeth grinding when it doesn’t!!
I hope the worst is now behind both of us.

Another blogger helped me recover a portion of my lost blog. The blank post was in the trashcan (where I put it). I recovered it from the trash, and could look up the version control. For reasons I don’t understand, not all of it was in there, but I learned something new out of the experience.

I’m also in a constant battle with computers and, yes, this was me on Friday — a 4 hour marathon call with DELL technical support who failed to resolve my paragraph-spacing issue following an automatic software update by Windows 10.” Every single update brings some important function to a halt! Ugh. You are so brave to try Apple. It’s an alien life form if you’re used to MS. Hang in there. Sending you light beams of computer kindness. 😀

    • I have never had such a bad experience with a computer, or with Windows, until I got the demon PC a few years ago. That thing failed to work properly from day 1 .. and yes, I sent it back twice for parts to be replaced. It never helped, and quite frankly, DELL tech support is useless.

Sometimes a bad experience forces us to make a dramatic move, and joining Team Apple was mine.
I like to think I’m a pretty smart person, and so the transition didn’t take so long. Like anything, preparing to invest a little bit of time in learning has paid off.

  14. I feel your pain Joanne. As a longtime PC user, recently converted to all things Apple (and now straddling both worlds by running Parallels software so I can use my MacBook for work), I am often stumped by my iMac and MacBook. Until I realize that to do what I want to do in Apple products is almost always stunningly simple and intuitive, compared to Windows. Once I stop trying to make things harder than they need to be, and do what seems more natural, the Macs and I get along much better. Still, old habits are hard to break and the frustration is real!

    • And that’s the crux of the problem … old habits are hard to break!!
In the short time I’ve had it, I’ve actually adjusted to it very quickly. The only thing that continues to stump me is Lightroom and quite frankly I’ve been in this position before in a PC to PC conversion. The problem is Lightroom. It is NOT a user friendly application.

      • I thought it would be this whole new learning curve (copy/paste, along with getting to an end of a line, did take a while because the commands for them are slightly different). But ultimately I did settle in with it in short order. My wife just had a problem with her iMac screen, and Apple replaced the screen with no problem under the warranty. Good luck!

Most of the time I can’t understand them or it takes FOREVER. I can’t do 3 to 4 hours on the phone. Fortunately, my current one has been working well the last year or so and it’s just updates that get it all funked up. I bought a new Lenovo laptop this summer for portability and it’s been heaven. It’s nice to have the luxury of a backup although I could also use my Kindle Fire. I hate technology too and miss my IT department at work. I rarely create directly into WordPress. 18. Ugh, ugh, ugh. That is the pits, Joanne. I’m struggling right now to resolve an issue with the sleep mode on my laptop, which makes the screen turn white. Thankfully, it hasn’t affected anything else, but I would prefer to fix it myself than to have my computer guy hand me a bill for $80. I wanted to buy Apple years ago, but my then husband said, “No, no, no, get the HP Touchsmart with Windows Vista!” Oh yeah, I guess you know how that turned out. Anyhow, Macs are too expensive for my pocketbook, so I’ll be sticking with whatever keeps me blogging.

WordPress – I feel your pain there too! A week ago my readership dropped to almost zilch and though WordPress promised to check to see whether they have messed up my stats, I have yet to hear from them. So, basically I am back to the same ‘popularity’ I was when I started blogging 7 years ago. Very strange.

On there, if you look at the box top-right where you save and publish there is a section called Revisions which I think updates every time you save. Next to it is a hyper-link to Browse. From there you can see the different versions you have saved and choose which one to restore – I think! I’ve had a quick look at the new editor and I can see the same feature under Post Settings : Status.

I wanted a Mac back in the day, it’s all I used at university. My parents were reasonable and whatnot, a PC for $800 or a Mac for $1200 — not a choice in their eyes, and so I said, “Alright, just get me a word processor with a French wheel,” and they did and I used that happily for many, many years. With, you know, floppy disks that I will never recover data from. lol
I would still like a Mac, but I am now all reasonable like my parents, and so I never have bought one. Maybe when my kids are grown. But I bet I’d struggle, and does my external hard drive even know how to Mac? There’s just a lot to relearn and unknow. *sigh*

I had to send it back to them twice and they NEVER fixed the problem. At some point I just had to recognize that (1) the computer was a lemon and would never be fixed, (2) DELL tech support doesn’t have a clue.
Time to cut bait and move on.
It was a big gulp wrapping my head around the Apple price tag, but ….

I had the same concerns about my external hard drive, but thankfully I navigated those waters. Yay Siri!

  30. AAAARRRRGGGG!!!! Your face says it all. I clicked on your CBF link and was surprised at the error page displayed. I always write my posts in Word first, then cut and paste. If I had to recreate the whole thing from scratch, I don’t know if I would have the energy either. I’m still working on my CBF post and hope to get it up today… as long as my demon PC doesn’t thwart me. Maybe with the extra week you’ll reconsider and tell us about those love letters (which, I’m pretty sure, doesn’t include any correspondence with DELL or Apple).

  31. Oh, Joanne–the dreaded words: “oops! That post cannot be found.” I wondered what happened, but then I am just hoping I can even link my post to the linky thing in the Cherished Blogfest…thing. Good luck. That random photo is very cool, by the way.

    • You got the dreaded “Oops!” page because I had to delete the post. Otherwise you would have seen, well, nothing. It was all most disheartening.

Good luck with the linky thing … I’ll be looking for your post 🙂
