May Is Done

Here we are with another month in the rearview mirror.

As I reflect back on the month-that-was, I want to complain about how spring seems to have skipped us this year. Although we’ve had a handful of seasonably warm and sunny days here and there, for the most part we have been stuck on the cool-and-wet cycle.

However, I find I can’t really complain. This was a month where, in spite of the weather, I have somehow managed to squeeze out the best the month had to offer anyway.

Although I managed to have only one bike ride outdoors so far this year, it was during the annual Paddle The Don which was happening on the east end of the city. I took advantage of the rare non-rainy day to cycle along the Don River Trail to watch the canoes and kayaks as they made their way downstream.

Boats are not normally allowed on the Don River, but once a year when water levels are high, this event is held as a fund raiser for the Toronto Region Conservation Foundation and dozens of paddlers take part.

This is not an easy paddle. It has at least one portage involved and some patches of ‘rough’ water. For this newbie paddler, the portage is a showstopper, so I’m happy to watch this event from the sidelines.

I did however have two opportunities to get my new kayak into the water this month. Both were events held by the Seniors’ Club I belong to.

The first was in Toronto Harbour. Don’t let the blue sky fool you – it was a chilly day!

If you’re wondering about the chairlift in this photo, there is a children’s amusement park on this island and it includes an ‘aerial’ ride.
Notice how high the water level is. The island residents are again fighting rising water and flooding.

Our second paddle was on the Humber River on the west end of the city.

In just one week we saw the trees start to turn green again … but it was still pretty chilly.

Then finally Helen and I got a chance to head outdoors for a hike. In the past year we haven’t managed to get in much hiking together but we scored a beautiful day to explore a conservation area we hadn’t yet visited.

It was worth the 90 minute drive.

Warsaw Caves Conservation Area with my long-time friend, Helen
Water levels were very high here too. I suspect this picnic table isn’t normally an island.

If you aren’t familiar with what some people call ‘black’ water, this is typical of northern Ontario. It is my understanding that this is caused when there is a lot of wetland in the watershed. The organic material in the wetland acts as a ‘teabag’ and stains the water.

At first glance, the water appears to be ‘muddy’ but is in fact clean and clear … it just looks unsettling to people who aren’t familiar with it.

Finally the month ended as all good months should – in the company of great friends. I have been lucky to call this group of wonderful ladies my friends for many years.

Lisa, Cathy, Barb, Suzanne, and I … with Cathy’s son Tom photobombing us in the background. Cathy’s horse farm, Awesome Acres, was the perfect setting for this great afternoon together.

So this has been my month of May. I’ve taken full advantage of the outdoors in spite of the less-than-ideal spring conditions. I suspect we’ll be getting more of the same in the weeks ahead.

  1. I’m pretty sure that the waters in Roanoke look just like that. I’m hoping to do some kayaking when I head back to Virginia. I prefer slow moving to the whitewater though! The weather this year has definitely had a mind of its own.

  2. I love that photo of the one with the city in the background – and what a cool event – and it is blog posts like this that remind me how much of the world we see via blog connections
And you are blessed to have Helen and the other peeps

  3. Much like last year, we seemed to skip spring, going from cool and wet to hot hot hot. Even I complained of continued sweaters. This week, though, seems like spring weather! Wild and wonderful!
Looks like you have a nice group of friends to play with 🙂

  4. Hi Joanne, My husband took our boat (16ft) onto the ocean this morning for the first time in quite awhile. Coincidentally, I was telling him this morning about your christening kayak photos and tonight I read about your kayak. Even though the weather was grey in some of the photos, Spring is here when you can cycle along a trail and watch the canoes go by. I love the photo of the friends. Priceless 🙂

  5. I could have waved to you from the Humber bridge – I live one building over from the river. It’s fun to see everyone in their canoes or kayaks and there are lots of fishermen as well! Hope you were well bundled up!

    • I’ve been by this way a number of times on my bike and always envied those on the water. It was really cool finally getting the view from the water level 🙂

    • Then that makes 2 of us!! My upper body strength is pretty abysmal.

I went to a paddling clinic a couple of summers ago and learned that the correct way to paddle is using your core muscles rather than just arm strength. It makes a huge difference! I can tell when I’m not paddling properly because my arms start to get really tired.

… on the other hand, the core workout is nothing to squeeze at either 😉

  6. Hi Joanne,
Loved the paddling photos; when we were on our Wedding Roadtrip it was evidence all along the way how wet the spring had been and how high the waters were everywhere! In Toronto, too, it seems! We went across southern Ontario on the 401 and 403 between Windsor and Niagra on our way home and I thought of you!

  7. Hi Joanne! I LOVED the photo of you and all your friends AND the all the nature shots. I realized I haven’t been keeping up with your posts so I plan to do that. And now that summer??? is hopefully here for you, I’m looking forward to all your adventures. ~Kathy

    • Hi Kathy! I too am so far behind on catching up with what’s happening on other blogs like yours.

Summer is quickly barrelling down on us even though the weather isn’t cooperating much. I’ll take it though. It may be chilly but it’s better than ice and snow!!

  8. You made the most of what you were given and what a blessing to have such good friends! It’s been very rainy here. In fact it’s difficult to get anything done in the yard for that reason. I haven’t been able to get onto the back trails of the park where I like to walk even with duck boots. Sometimes there actually been water on the trail, sometimes just so much mud that it’s impossible and impassable. No matter the weather, it seems that May flew by much to quickly. Hopefully June will slow down and relax a bit…and dry out somewhat. The farmers are especially in need of no rain for a time as many can’t get into their fields to plant, a potential financial disaster for them and other sort of disaster for us.

  9. So much water. So jealous. It’s still terribly dry here. We’ve had some rain, maybe 100 mm since Jan 1. Our annual average is ~ 700 mm so we are well behind. Enjoy your beautiful Summer Joanne. Loved those St. Malo pics and stories.

  10. Looks like you made the month work. Here is was rainy and cool. A switch was flipped this week and we are going right into summer. I’m not complaining though. No tornadoes or damage from flooding. Today was gorgeous. We take what we get and make it work!

  11. I’m so glad you’ve managed to get our kayaking and hiking, despite the weather. Your kayaking shots on Toronto Harbour have me thinking that I really need to figure out how to get out on our harbour more.

  12. Looks like a marvelous May! Our weather has alternated between hot and cool, wet and sunny, sometimes all in one day. The trees are in full summer leaf already. Love the pictures of all your friends, including the one of Helen. Nothing sweeter than long-time friends. 🙂

    • Friends are the best 🙂

My friend, Suzanne, and I have had a few outings over the years that proved to be disappointing. The destination didn’t live up to our expectations, but we realized it didn’t really matter what we did, or where we went, it was the time spent together that really mattered ❤️

    • I didn’t realize you had a fog season. I’m hoping that’s not true for the east coast as well. I’m heading there next weekend and if it’s foggy, it will defeat the purpose of being there for the views!

  13. Wonderful May shots, Joanne! I envy you being in the water already. With all the rain, “my” river is a bit too fast and flooded still for my comfort at the moment. But soon I’ll be taking ol’ Smokey Robinson into it again…maybe even tomorrow if the weather proves promising.

    • Thanks 🙂 It’s actually an apple tree … Cathy has several in fact, and pears. I don’t recall ever being at the farm in the spring to see the blossoms out and it really was quite beautiful.

  14. Looks like a month of great activity and movement, fun and friends, love and joy. Much to celebrate, Joanne, and you are. It does look chilly, admittedly, so I hope the new month of summer will bring you warmer times.

    • Right now the long range forecast for the summer doesn’t look good here – both cooler and wetter than normal.

Personally, I don’t like the extreme heat so I don’t tend to complain when it’s cool, but we’ve had SO MUCH RAIN. I think we’re all at risk of developing webbed feet 😉

    • Right now our long range forecast doesn’t look great but I’m trying to look on the bright side – our electricity bill will be low if there’s no need for A/C 😏

On the down side, the furnace is still on 😕

  15. Hey Joanne, I feel your pain in regard to spring and May. It’s been more wet and cool than sunny and warm. I’ve had two bike rides and now I’m waiting for a day I can start riding to work. At some point, the weather has to turn for the better…right?

    Right?

Anyhow, let’s hope for a sunny, warm June…right after I get past another rainy, cool Saturday! :-p
