A Touch of Unexpected

It’s Thursday again already. How did that happen?

Since it appears that the only travelling I’m going to do for a long while is through my photo library, I’m taking another dip into the archives from February’s visit to Dublin.

I’m drawn to anything that strikes me as unusual, and today’s Thursday door selections are no exception. I chose them specifically for their touch of the unexpected.

Like these dogs guarding the entrance.
Lions are more typical … although not usually quite like this.
Or a door with a set of glasses hooked on the door knocker.
I’m pretty sure that if I misplaced my glasses, this would be last place I’d think of looking.
The brickwork on this tiny church caught my eye from some distance.
However when I got closer, it was the multitude of tiny faces on the top of the short columns that held my attention.
Last week’s door from the Dublin Art Museum was a favourite of many. I loved the detailing in each of the door ways.
And lastly, because Theo seems to be a favourite, he’s back at Thursday Doors again this week … this time on the outside of the door wondering if it’s lunch time yet. The answer is ‘yes’.

  1. European, Arabic, Moroccan and Asian Architecture just captivate me. Thanks for Sharing these delightful Images of Ireland. Never been there, tho’ we lived for Years in England and North Wales is where my Mom is actually from and gave birth to me there… so I should have had no excuse to miss Ireland and Scotland.

  2. I bet the glasses are hung on the door so that the owner can find the correct key on his key ring, and the be able to see the key hole on the door too.

    Cuz i have a problem seeing my keys too.

  8. I like to think someone spotted the glasses on the porch and put them on the doorknocker to avoid anyone stepping on them 🙂
    These have such vivid colors, like sunshine — I think we need all the bright and happy!

  11. Lovely to return to Dublin for another visit. The door at the Art Museum is particularly stunning. I suggested doing a similar carving in Amandla’s companionway door, but the Captain is not game, and neither of us is master carvers ;-). The glasses on the door knocker had me roaring. Fabio is always leaving his in the damndest places and then forgetting where he’d placed them.

    • Sadly, I think it’s a function of this stage in our lives. My husband recently questioned how many pairs of glasses I actually had. I have them scattered EVERYWHERE. By increasing the numbers, I increase my odds of finding a pair when I need them 😉

    • It is an unusual name. I admit I did a double-take on it too. The entire church was very unusual. Unfortunately I could not get a half-decent photo of the indoors. I suspect there might be a good story behind this church but I haven’t done any investigating.

    • I agree, Suzanne. I didn’t expect to love Dublin as much as I did. Sometimes I get a bit jaded about travelling and sometimes it just feels like more of the same. However, Dublin delivered. It’s a wonderful city and if I’m lucky, I’ll get back to Ireland again some day.

      • Hi Joanne. We often have the same feeling, especially travelling through Europe as the architecture is often very similar as is the fabric of cities. But you have to look for the little details that make it different and focus on that. Also, I have found that what makes a place different are the people and the Irish are absolutely charming.

  23. Loved this collection of doorrs. The first one caught my eye & then quickly went to that gorgeous chandelier! I suspect Theo was resting after his painting efforts 😂

    • This building delivered a one-two punch for me. The dogs caught my attention, but the chandelier kept it. It was a gray, damp day and the chandelier lit up the interior in such a warm inviting manner. I wanted to walk up and go inside.

  26. I LOVE those little faces on those very elaborate columns. The different coloured bricks appears to be very Victorian, but the columns? I suppose someone found those glasses on the floor and thoughtfully hung them on the door knocker so they don’t get trodden on. I wonder if anyone ever reclaimed them?

    • I passed that door several times over 3 days and the glasses were always there. A mystery.

      On most old buildings, this kind of detail can’t really be enjoyed because it’s so high up. However on this tiny building, the little faces were only a few feet above my head. Maybe that’s why I was so attracted to them.

  27. I’ve found my glasses in many a peculiar place but never on the knocker! I’m a great fan of having animal greeters next to my front door even if they don’t bark and roar.

    • Hmmm – you’ve just inspired me to find a big cat to adorn my front step. I know just the place for it.
      Now I just have to wait for this pandemic crisis to pass. I think I know where I might find one!

  28. These are pretty cool doors. I love the church entrance, but they are all good. Theo is a cutie. I hope he got lunch on time. He appears to be wasting away 😏

  30. A fun selection of the unexpected. I especially enjoyed the animal shots; live and otherwise 😉
    Also I’d be willing to take bets that those glasses will be broken long before they get found…or more likely, they get found by getting broken 😀

  31. Oh, Theo–if you ever come to Florida, my three girls will be waiting. He is the cutest little guy! The glasses on the door knocker….no. Never would I look there. But I sure would love to know the story behind them!

    • I’m going to lament – not for the first time – what a shame it is that cats generally are such bad travellers. I would love to take Theo places with me, but he is just so uncool. He’ll never know what he’s missing.

  35. Eons ago I used to have a poster of doors of Dublin. They were very polite looking doors. I like your selection very much because they show a realistic range. Not sure I’d stay at the Arlington Hotel, though, even if there are lions guarding the door.

  42. People are unique on some of their thoughts on design and entrances. A smile on the glasses. Almost eery on the tiny faces. Theo is a cutie. Is he outside? Has it warmed up? Looking forward to staying connected, Joanne.🙂

    • I suspect that Theo is the chubbiest, most spoiled ‘feral’ cat in the world. He thinks he’s wild 🙄 so yes, he spends a lot of time outdoors, especially on a warm, sunny day. His typical ‘wild animal’ behaviour usually consists of finding a nice place to nap.

      It does feel like spring is here – although it will be still a while before I see any buds (tulips, notwithstanding 😉)
